According to The Verge, Microsoft is finally planning to block VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macros in Office applications by default. This change will apply to Office files downloaded over the Internet and include macros.
Less than a week after announcing the disabling of the MSIX AppX application installer, and after announcing XLM macro restrictions last month, today the Redmond software giant announced that it will block VBA macros in Office files, specifically including Access files, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Word, are downloaded on the network by default.

In its announcement, Microsoft said VBA macros are a common way attackers use to grant access to and deploy malware and ransomware. Therefore, to improve Office security, the company blocks VBA macros in Office files downloaded from the Internet.
The new feature is scheduled to roll out to test users on the Preview channel in early April, before Microsoft rolls it out to its regular Microsoft 365 customers and on the Office apps for Windows first. The company also plans to update Office LTSC, Office 2021, Office 2019, Office 2016, and Office 2013 to block VBA macros on the Internet. Link to download Office versions here:

Instead of enabling/enabling these potentially harmful macros by default, Office applications display a Security Risk warning with a Learn More link.
